| Gabriel's main purpose is to handle the business end of Cakes by the "Pound" (besides the dishes) thus allowing Mendy more time to work with clients and on creating her extraordinary cakes. He has worked side by side with Mendy in designing their cake studio, having creative input on cake design and sweeping the floor. When Gabriel isn't helping Mendy in the cake studio, you can find him working on his "other" job-Gabriel's main profession is working for television shows, as a sound man. He has worked on shows ranging from Platinum Weddings to Project Runway, has covered events from red carpet celebrity extravaganzas to Gucci fashion shows. His broad exposure in the of television industry and such events gives Cakes by the "Pound", an insight of the upcoming trends. Gabriel and Mendy met during the recording of "Welcome to the Parker", a reality show, shot in Palm Springs, where Mendy as well as other hotel workers were followed by cameras. That is where he saw and tasted Mendy's work and the rest is history.... |
| Mendy Pound's pastry career started out making sculptures, pencil drawings, and silk screen art. Her mother is a fabulous baker and encouraged Mendy to draw and paint on the cakes. Having the sweet tooth that she did, and the discovery of marzipan and fondant, Mendy instantly fell in love with all of the possibilities of making art out of sugar. After being the baker for Designed Events, (an upscale caterer in Jacksonville, FL) making the pastries and wedding cakes, Mendy went on to earn her Bachelors Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts from Johnson & Wales University. She then studied in Vienna, Austria at DO & CO International Catering, working events in the UK, France, Germany, and Austria. After Vienna, Mendy honed her skills in making bread and traditional Swiss pastry working in the Backerei and Konditorei of Müller Beck located in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Mendy then returned to the States to build and manage the full service pastry department at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Spa. Mendy's team provided all pastry for the hotel's 530 rooms, banquets, restaurant outlets, and special events such as hosting Super Bowl XXIX. She then ventured out to California to work as Executive Pastry Chef of The Parker Palm Springs, continuing to make specialty and wedding cakes. The Parker Hotel is featured on the Bravo T.V. reality show "Welcome to The Parker" airing July 2007. Mendy has recently teamed up with Gabriel Vidauri to open Cakes by The "Pound" where she will continue to create unique cakes for the Los Angeles area. "Mendy has a penchant for creating artistic wedding cakes that taste exquisite." - Executive Chef Charles Charbonneau, Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Spa. |
